Carbon Footprint

Climate change continues to be one of the major concerns for our world. Greenhouse gases, including CO2, have been identified as major contributors to global climate change. While our operations produce very few direct emissions of CO2, we do purchase electricity and other forms of energy, resulting in indirect emissions. These indirect emissions form part of our carbon footprint, or impact, as a result of our operations.

In 2008, JCPenney opened 35 new stores, added 48 new Sephora inside JCPenney (SiJCP) shops and experienced an overall increase in store support hours. Despite these factors, the energy usage in 2008 was essentially the same as that in 2007.

JCPenney participates in the Carbon Disclosure Project, an initiative by a worldwide group of institutional investors that encourages companies to report on their energy programs and their carbon footprint. Our reports are available on the Carbon Disclosure Project’s website at www.cdproject.net.
