SmartWay

To promote greater efficiency and reduced environmental impact from the movement of goods through the supply chain, we joined the SmartWay Transport Partnership in 2006. SmartWay is a voluntary effort among various freight industry sectors and the Environmental Protection Agency that establishes incentives for fuel efficiency improvements and greenhouse gas reductions.

There are three primary components of the program: creating partnerships, eliminating unnecessary engine idling and increasing the efficiency and use of rail and intermodal operations.

In 2008, SmartWay carriers accounted for 85 percent of our total truck transportation expenditures. Since 2006, we have required carriers to turn off engines while waiting at our facilities to be loaded or unloaded, reducing average idle times significantly.
