Design Trainee
JCPenney Design teams translate trends and create silhouettes for the largest volume of private brands of any retail department store -- nearly 50 percent of our merchandise mix. As a Design Trainee in our Home Office in Plano, Texas (just 20 minutes north of downtown Dallas), you will be assigned to one of JCPenney's private brands and work side-by-side with Design and Trend teams as you experience firsthand the private brand process. During this six-month program, you will be a valued member of a Design team, working on projects, presentations, sketching, trend research, competitive shopping and more. You will engage and interact with Buyers, Designers, Sourcing, Trend, overseas offices and suppliers, as well as other Design Trainees. With the mentoring and coaching of senior team members, you’ll actively participate in the development of a merchandise line – beginning with establishing seasonal merchandise concepts all the way to reviewing final assortments.
We look for candidates with a strong awareness of trends and merchandising strategies, the ability to design around concepts and design flat sketches, superior leadership and communication skills, and knowledge of CAD, U4IA, Illustrator and PDM. Candidates also need a four-year degree in fashion design or business with a minimum 3.0 GPA and a desire to move to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Previous design or retail experience is a plus. Our Design Trainee program allows for you to specialize in one of our Apparel, Soft Home, Hard Home, Footwear, of Accessories areas. Upon successful completion of this highly competitive program, you will be promoted to Assistant Designer with the expectation that you will continue to progress up the career path.
